Game Review: PES 2008 PC Demo
Wednesday, 7 November 2007
haha this is something to help me to destress!
the game is Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 PC demo, the actual game has not been acquired yet, although i hear rumours that brian wong already has a copy of it, since it's already released. anyway, back to the game review. the demo game is readily available online for download, and it's meant to be downloaded legally, so that people can try out the game before it comes out.
before the game was released, there was much hype about how the best soccer game on the planet would have revolutionary game play and graphics, such that it will be even better than the highly successful and popular PES 6. so it was with much expectation that i tried out the pc demo, hoping it would be able to live up to its billing.
i was pretty impressed by the layout and graphics, but i was quite disturbed by the fact that the game resembled more like FIFA than PES/Winning 11. it seems that PES has taken elements from the style and gameplay of FIFA and incorporated them into their newest edition. the only game view offered in the demo version gave quite a broad view of the field, which gave it a more FIFA feel than a PES feel. the actions and movements of the individual players were not well shown, and the higher graphics demand meant that there were many times when the game lagged, and was not as smooth as the previous versions. considering that PES has always paid more attention to the gameplay rather than the graphics, it is interesting to note the attempt to beef up the graphics.
the game physics was markedly different from the previous version, in that the tactics which i used to great effect in PES 6 cannot be used any longer in the current version, something which is quite expected, actually. there is a whole new style of game play which the player has to get used to, before being able to master and enjoy the game.
due to the large program size (about 4GB), i had to remove some of my unused programs and even compress and defragment my hard disk before i could install the game successfully. the enhanced graphics engine also adds to the system requirements, the graphics card which i'm using (ATI Radeon X700 64MB) was just barely able to support the game.
overall, i must say that the game deserves a try, and though the new game departs from the traditional style of PES to a certain extent, there are still elements of the old and familiar in the game, which makes it an interesting mix of the old and the new. though as of now i still prefer PES 6 due to my familiarity with it, i'm willing to try out the full version of PES 2008, that is if i'm able to acquire it. the demo version does not have many of the features that the full version offers, so i'm looking forward to see what else this newest product from PES has to offer.
